07-14-09 UPDATE NOTE: My daughter in law pointed out to me that I now accept text messaging so I needed to update this blog!
I still don't like it but I have it. I still prefer talking with people. I have found a free tool that records my voice and changes it to a text message to someone so at least I don't have to type on that crazy dial pad.
Original blog from 2007:
While I have text messaging available on all three of my cell phones, I block that feature on all three lines. I realize it is the preferred method of contact (is that "moc") for many GenX and most GenY but I would have to learn another foreign language. These "youngins" have amazing speed and are quite proficient with this talent and I am impressed but they leave this old man in the dust on this tool.
I already know French, a little German, Swedish, Italian, and Pig Latin. I know a shortcut language that was used by "The Write Stuff", a word processor on the Commodore 64 that I still use today (the language, not the C64) for writing and typing notes to myself. But this new text shortcut language, the fact that I have to use my thumbs that don't work as well any more for this grandpa of 6, the fact that my thumbs wear out more quickly than my voice, that fact that I feel talking allows for better interaction and less misunderstandings, make me still want to use my cell for talking.
While I don't want to lose the business of GenX and GenY buyers, I hope they will understand that I still have tremendous benefits in the real estate world to them without being able to know whether "swalk" is sealed with a loving kiss or sent with a loving kiss. I have years of experience in marketing, researching information on homes, and in tough negotiating to get the best deal for you whether you are buying or selling a home. So here's hoping I can t2ul8r, GenX and GenY out there, which is "talk" to you later and not "text" to you later!

You have a very good point. I have 2 teenagers and an 8 year old and texting is all the 2 teenagers do. My 8 year old asks if he can get a phone when he is 9 and all I can do is laugh. Kids today.

Hello Lawrence!
I have the ability to text and have done so maybe 3 or 4 times with a Client. However, like you, I am not proficient at it and it would take me a month of Sundays to get a sentence out to a client. Thus, as a time saver in the busy lives of everybody- I use the phone to make a "voice to voice" call. :)
I've learned more the the cellular commercials promoting texting than from any other source!
BFF--best friend forever
NOYB--None of your business
ROFL--rolling on floor laughing
LOL--laugh out loud
LMAO--laughing my ____ off

There are so many more...it does make it easy to quicky communicate with my snert! I used this one recently...u r grnded LOL!
hehe,
Yea I know how you feel, texting is now used more than calling by them youngins. Evolve or die.
Take care!

I'm sure I could add more to that list of acronyms, but I'm sure everyone else's head hurts already. =)
Text messaging is a powerful tool though. My website sends me a text everytime I get a contact on it. I can call the people on the other end in mere moments after they send me a email via my site.
Rob:
This looks like a whole new language.
Rob,
When my client texted me, "suakm" I thought she was saying that she wanted the "same unit as Karen's mom". Oh my, what do I do now?
Lucky :)
Thanks Angela, Danielle, Rick, Amanda, Stev, Robert, Daniel, Bill, and younger brother Lucky for stopping by and commenting.
That list I have is just some of the S's and part of the T's. There are literally whole dictionaries of these texting shortcuts. It's incredible!
I didn't realize I was missing SPAM by not having text messages. What types of SPAM came in? The same as junk mail?
Speaking of shortcuts, has anyone come up with a shortcut to these graphic words? Some of them are getting rather long. It used to be nice when you got pear or apple. Now there are hyphenated "longies" popping up.
Rob
Oh, who knows, its all spam like the emails and phone calls - I just delete it. The one I got last night while eating at a restaurant with my family was wanting me to visit a web site for a chance to win a bmw or $50,000 - yeah right.
I didn't catch the familial connection there until you mnetioned it, very nice.
